Geese, oh my gosh, Geese!

blog-refuge-geese-2.jpg

I was driving around and ended up at the Merced Wildlife Refuge again. There were hardly any ducks where I usually stop to photograph sunsets and the sky was pretty grey. I  had changed my focus and was looking for flowers or other close up items when I came across a field filled with geese. They were just milling around nothing much was happening when I spotted some toad stools and decided to photograph them. With wet knees I headed back to my truck, as I opened the door I turned around and saw this. I couldn’t change my lens fast enough. As I’ve said before. Widen your horizens, opportunities happen all the time. While this is not the best photo I’ve ever taken, being in the presence of this spectacular show was amazing.

Within 5 minutes the geese had moved to the center of the refuge and out of camera range.

This is one of many, of my favorite photos of Yosemite. I like the lines and the general feel of it. Just thought I’d share. Hope you enjoy it as well

Spring flowers inspire

photoblog-day-44.jpg

These flowers were photographed in a front-yard around my house. Since there were cars in the background I used my reflector as a background. After I developed them I decided to take them a step further and played with the filters in Photoshop. This is the result!

Fireball

photoblog-day-41.jpg

Sunsets are always amazing especially in central California. In order to get the best possible color range I took my raw photograph and created three different tif files, one underexposed (-2), one normal exposed and one overexposed (+2). Out of the three tif  files I created a 32 bit image which contains a much wider tonal range than a standard image file. The 32 bit hdr file had to undergo a second editing process to bring out the best possible range of colors for this image.

Flower Power

A simple white background is a tremendous help for flower photography. I used a simple white board that you can purchase for a few dollars at Michaels or Staples.

Enjoy!

Tree in the Valley

Spring is my favorite time. The landscape and vegetation in the San Joaquin Valley is absolutely fantastic. The mountains in the background provide a wonderful contrast.

Happy seeing and photographing

Storm in Yosemite

photoblog-day-40.jpg

Yosemite is fascinating at every time of the year. I love clouds over Half Dome. Sometimes I have to wait a while before the light is just right or I have to edit and re-edit until I get what I want.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Finally a bee!

blogbee-flower.jpg

I have taken a lot of ‘bee’ photographs, most ending up throw aways. Since bees seldom sit on a flower for long, they present a lot of difficulties, you have to have a quick focus and reflexes.

On this one I used a moderate aperture setting of 5.6 which kept both the flower and bee in focus while blurring the background. There were a lot of bees about these flowers so I waited semi-patiently watching just a few flowers hoping one would land and I’d be ready.

Mist, trees and Yosemite

blogyosemite-12-08-a.jpg

I was hoping to go to Yosemite this weekend but as luck would have it we had wonderful weather during the week but the day I can go up there it is supposed to be raining most of the day. So I thought I’d share one of the pictures I took a couple of months ago. I took a LOT so you may be seeing some more in the future.
