Kid soldiers

photoblog-day-91.jpg

Children are our future. Sending them to war jeopardizes our future. It is as simple as that. By the same token, the word sacrifice becomes a new meaning when we send out future in harms way.

I started out photographing and having fun. A few days later I realize how much my own photographs have challenged me.

Have a great day photographing.

Shooting and Photographing

photoblog-day-90.jpg

Soldiers shoot with guns, photographers with cameras. We are using the the word and still there is a fundamental difference. People with guns have the potential to kill,  photographers have the potential to create.  What would I rather do? I am glad to be a photographer!

Happy shooting (with your camera of course!)

Yankee soldier on guard duty

photoblog-day-89.jpg

I talked to this young soldier and asked him if I could photograph him. He agreed and as soon as I put up my large format camera he posed for me with this very serious look. I almost asked him to smile, but I didn’t. War is serious business and these young men were at war. If I remember correctly 600.000 soldiers lost their lives and nobody can smile about that.

Photography can make you think, doesn’t it?

LAS MARIPOSAS CIVIL WAR DAYS

photoblog-day-88.jpg

Historic re-enactments are a great source for photography. I loved photographing with my old large format camera and of course took a few pictures with my digital slr. I found two challenges:

1. The direct sunlight created harsh shadows. I was happy that my wife helped me with a large diffuse to block the direct sunlight out of the man’s face.

2. There were two many 21st century people and things around. In other words, I had to find the proper background. A car in the background of this picture would have ruined the shot.

Happy shooting

Coming soon to a bottle near you.

blog-wine-vines.jpg

I took this just outside of Chowchilla a few days after they planted what I presume to be grape vines. I looked inside the white tubes and that’s what I think I saw anyway. I like verticals and you can’t find many more than this. I tried changing it to black and white or sepia, but the red stakes add just a bit of color, beside the dirt is almost sepia anyway

Size Matters

I took this photo some time ago and just rediscovered it. I like the simplicity of the lines and the clouds as background. It is actually more powerful as a larger image. Sometimes size matters.

“La Purisima”

photoblog-day-87.jpg

I was relatively early at the mission. Despite the fact that there were many visitors around I had the opportunity to photograph the long hallways without people.

Enjoy and happy shooting!

Come on in….

photoblog-day-86.jpg

This photo is an invitation. Come on in, order some drinks and have a good time. And a good time a had indeed …with my camera photographing him.

Enjoy and don’t be shy asking people to pose for you!

Let the light in

photoblog-day-85.jpg

I photographed at the mission “La Purisima” about 20+ miles away from Solvang. The mission is a State Park today and hosts events like “Pioneer Days” where people are dressed up like they were living in the 18th century. While the candle make, baker, mason etc. were doing their duties and attracting the attention of all the visitors, I was able to find a relatively quiet room at the end of the mission. I loved how the light peeked in and was reflected on the floor.

Enjoy!

Solvang, CA

photoblog-day-84.jpg

The small town of Solvang provides ample opportunity for every photographer. There are beautiful buildings portraing Danish architectual styles. There are many flowers and the combination of the two can be used for creating beautiful images.

Enjoy!
