Fallen Log in Yosemite.

blogwater-and-fallen-log.jpg

This was take just below where Friedhelm took the picture of the bridge below Bridalveil Falls. To get the water effect I used ISO 200 at F9 for 1.3 seconds. Have you ever had a bad day at Yosemite, I haven’t.

As Friedhelm and I walked up to the base of Bridalveil Falls someone said there was a rainbow. With the light changing quickly, trying to keep my camera and lens dry and setting up the tripod,  I just got off this shot before the rainbow disappeared.

A Patient Subject

moth-yosemite.jpg

When Friedhelm and I were in Yosemite he spotted this moth, unfortunatley for him his camera was in his backpack, sooo…….. This was an unusually cooperative moth, most animal shots are hit or miss.  The first couple of photos were taken in a hurry and didn’t turn out so great. When I realized he wasn’t going anywhere I took my time and got this shot.

An old Cedar Tree and Yosemite Falls

photoblog-day-127.jpg

I have photographed Yosemite falls several times in my life and I was looking for a way to photograph the fall in a different way. When I saw this old Cedar tree I was looking for areas to frame the fall. In order to get maximum depth of field I used f36, 30s iso 100 as my camera setting.

Enjoy!

Bridge and Bridelveil Creek

photoblog-day-126.jpg

Bridelveil fall and creek are always a great subject. When David and I arrived at the creek most of the people already left. That is usually the time I like to start photographing. The late light is wonderful and you don’t have to fight the crowds. You can use a long exposure time without fearing that someone would step into your composition. Here I used f22, 4s, iso100.

Have a great day!

Mirror Lake

photoblog-day-125.jpg

Mirror Lake was the next station of our photographic one day journey. We hiked the two mile round trip from bus stop #17. The weather was gorgeous and the hike pleasant. At the lake we had to fight the other tourists that wanted a picture with their friends or family members sitting on the rock  on the left hand side of the image.

Ansel Adams photographed the lake in black and white and he choose the landscape format. I opted for portrait because I wanted the big clouds and the reflection of them in the picture. I used f22, 1/15s, iso100.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

A stick in the creek

photoblog-day-124.jpg

We stopped below the first waterfall on our journey through Yosemite. Below the waterfall we photographed in the creek bed. There were relatively young trees which allowed light to penetrate. I put my tripod across the little creek and photographed water, rocks and twiggs.

Enjoy and happy photographing

Merced River at the Hwy 140 Entrance

photoblog-day-123.jpg

David and I went to Yosemite to photograph. We had a blast of a time and we shot some awesome pictures. We stopped at the entrance and there was a big boulder in the Merced river that allowed me to take this image. The camera setting was 24mm (full frame), f20, 1/125, iso 100.

Enjoy the journey

Boats and a Flower

blogflower-boats.jpg

I had a little fun here with Photoshop. I used a gradient layer to mix two different photos. I tried to self-teach myself Photoshop, I suggest that you take a class if at all possible. It gave me the confidence to explore further, something I had pretty much given up on. It is a very deep and complex program, but can do some amazining things.

Wrench Fan

blogpipe-wrenches.jpg

This is from one of the assignments I gave myself for this year. Simply to photograph tools. I use them a lot and thought I might get some intesting shots. This was taken in natural light inside my boiler room at work. I used an aperture of  5.6 to limit the depth of field but wanted to maintain some of the texture of the background objects.
