Votive 2

blogvotive-2.jpg

I was playing with my light table again. I like how the imperfections in the top candle holders distort the shapes and colors of the ones on the bottom.  Even the small bubbles in the glass add interest. While not great art, it is fun art. There you go………….

High Desert Flower

bloghigh-desert-flower.jpg

This time of the year you don’t see many flowers in the high desert,  it’s mostly dry scrub brush. I’m not sure if the thunder storm that had gone through the area the day before brought out these flowers or not.   I’d stopped by a Vista Point and the only flowers were on one small bush. The wind was blowing so I had the dilemma of depth of field versus stopping the action. I got lucky and the wind died down just long enough for me to get this at f20,  1/13 of a second at iso250 with a tripod of course. I also used an extension tube to get in close.

Light Table

blogvotive-holders.jpg

Over the weekend I made something called a light-table. It’s essentially a box with lights inside and an opaque surface on top. I used two 100w daylight bulbs. After seeing the result I think I’ll change it to four 60w bulbs. It will give me a more even toned, larger  background.

This is actually a stack of colored votive candle holders I’d purchased for another project.  There was enough light coming up from the light-table that I was able to hand hold this at 1/100 of a second f5.6. Being directly over the table I wasn’t able to use a tripod.

I think this could be fun!

Dome construction Theatine church, Munich, Germany

photoblog-day-149a.jpg

The Theatine church is the first baroque church in Munich.  The 233 feet high dome was finished in 1690. Words can hardly express what I felt inside this church. Originally it was a gift and expression of gratitude of Ferdinand Maria and his wife for the birth of their son.

Hofbräuhaus, Munich, Germany

photoblog-day-148.jpg

The famous Hofbräuhaus was founded in 1589 by the Bavarian Duke who did not like the beer from the local breweries. When we arrived a small band was playing. Bavarian folk music and beer inside this old traditional building are part of the composition. It was impossible to use a tripod. I had to use ISO 1000, f4 and 1/20s on a stabilized lens to get this shot.

Neues Rathaus (New-Cityhall), Munich, Germany

photoblog-day-147a.jpg

During the 19th century the need arose for a new administration building in Munich. The New City-hall was built in several phases. The first part was started in 1867 and the last part was finished in 1893. The building style is called “New-Gothic”.

photoblog-day-147b.jpg

We arrived at the early afternoon - not my favorite time to photograph - and still the images turned out to be okay. The puffy clouds helped a lot.

photoblog-day-147c.jpg

All images were shot without a tripod. I used f8 ISO 100 aperture priority.

Enjoy!

Gull on guard.

blogmono-lake-seagull.jpg

While most of his friends had flown off to the warmth of the California Coast this is one of the few seagulls that remained at Mono Lake. He seemed unfazed by the brisk/cool winds that were buffeting him and even less concerned about that guy with a camera. Not at all camera shy, this one.

This is an edited, though only slightly, RAW file. This type of file holds much more information than your standard Jpeg. If you have the option and a good editor, like the one from Canon, you’d be surprised at the depth of your images. In the jpeg file (I shoot both right now)  the sky was much less defined with very limited contrast.

Full Moon over Shasta Lake

blogmoonrise-over-lake-sha.jpg

Last Wednesday there was a full moon and I happened to be on the road traveling to my brothers house. As I drove over the I-5 bridge at Bridge Bay I knew I had to find some way to get a shot of the moon rising over Lake Shasta. It took a little maneuvering  but I finally found the spot.  To bad the lake was so low because of the drought.

The Residenz in Munich

photoblog-day-146.jpg

The Residenz is the palace of the Wittelsbach family, the former Monarchs of Bavaria. Today it is a museum. This is one of the prettiest castles I have ever seen and a must to see if you are in Munich. There are elements of at least four architectural styles in the Residenz, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Classicism. I was unable to use a tripod therefor I had to use ISO 800, f4 at 1/100s.

Happy Photographing!

St. Nicholas Church

photoblog-day-145.jpg

St. Nicholas church is one of the prettiest and influential churches in Germany. Johann Sebastian Bach, the famous composer, was organist here and the well known Monday prayers started here that rallied hundreds of thousands of people in the late 1980’s to end Communist dictatorship in former East-Germany.

The church was started in 1165 as a Romanesque basilica. Later it was transformed into a Gothic cathedral and in the 18th century changed into a neoclassical church. The church was constantly flooded by visitors and I had a hard time photographing without people walking through my viewfinder.
