Rainbow over Mariposa

photoblog-day-238.jpg

We were driving home from Yosemite in stormy weather. In Mariposa, CA an old mining town on Hwy. 140, we saw this beautiful rainbow. I had no time to set up a tripod because it was in the beginning of disappearing and it got dark rather quickly. At this moment I was really thankful for my 24-105 image stabilized lens. Camera setting: 24mm, f5.6, 1/40sec, ISO 100.

Enjoy!

Alone at the Wildlife Refuge

blogmerced-refuge-loner.jpg

I dropped by the Merced Wildlife Refuge today. There weren’t many birds yet and I found this one loner intriguing. The sun was just setting and the brisk winds that were blowing earlier had died down. Soon after this I drove around (it’s one way) and witnessed flocks of geese coming in for the night. It’s the beginning of the time of year that you need to think about going out to the refuge.

I upped the ISO on this shot to 400 which allowed a handheld 1/250 of a second, F9 at 300mm with an unstablized lens. I purposely used a moderate f-stop to keep just enough of the foreground in focus and blur the background adding to the depth of the photograph.

Merced River Reflections

blogreflecting-pool-11-21.jpg

Last trip to Yosemite we stopped along the Merced River, while the fall colors were waning there was still plenty of opportunity to incorporate them into the scene. 1/5sec. f5./6, ISO 250, 24mm.

From head to toe

photoblog-day-237.jpg

I love to photograph newborns. Since it is not a good idea to photograph a newborn with a flash I ask the mother to sit close to a large window. I used my 85mm portrait lens which naturally has a relatively narrow depth of field. The composition is a little bit difficult. Naturally the eye wander towards the face of any human subject and especially to babies. I wanted to put the emphasis on the little feet. Therefore I blurred the head out and photographed the foot in focus. The hand of the mother in between which is less blurred than the head gives the image an even stronger 3d feeling.

Yosemite Valley in November

photoblog-day-236.jpg

When we arrived at the tunnel on Hwy 41 we knew immediately that we would get some gorgeous  shots. The clouds were wonderful and the sun needed about 20 or so minute4s to shine on El Capitan. Half Dome however was in a huge cloud. Camera setting: 15mm, f22, 1/4sec., ISO 100.

Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy!

A special shadow

photoblog-day-235.jpg

When we arrived at the little chapel in Yosemite valley I walked across the street to the wooden bridge. The sun was not visible yet and I was looking to photograph frozen leaves. While I was photographing the sun peaked through and I was just ready to leave when I saw that the sun had melted the thin layer of frost on the bridge except the parts that were in the shadow. I quickly took the shot and a few minutes later the entire bridge was clear of surface frost. Sometimes timing is indeed everything!

Yosemite Falls in November

photoblog-day-234.jpg

Yosemite Falls is full of water during late Spring. In late Summer it is sometimes totally dry. We were very happy that there was water coming down the mountain even it was a relatively small amount. I decided to use three shots of the fall to combine them in a triptych. A triptych image was used during medieval times in churches in Europe. I thought it would create a nice impression of the fall by combining different views of the fall.

Fall Reflection

photoblog-day-233.jpg

As David mentioned yesterday our trip to Yosemite was just great. We had a lot of fun and got some great images. Our first stop after arriving in Yosemite (we took Hwy 140 coming from Mariposa, CA) was at the Merced river.  We discovered some beautiful reflections of the rocks and fall colors. Camera setting 24-105 lens @75mm,  f16, 3.2sec., ISO 100.

Enjoy

A beginning and end.

Several members of the Chowchilla Photo Club went to Yosemite today. It was a very successful photo shoot. Check out the clubs website over the next week or so and hopefully we’ll have photos posted by all the members that went   www.passionforphotos.com. Here are a couple of mine, taken at our first stop and last:

bloglone-tree-0021.jpg

I was intrigued by this lone tree that found an anchor in a crack on the side of this rock face. That’s one tough tree.  I balanced the tree with the dark rock face in the upper left with only minor adjustments in Photo Shop.  F5.0, 1/250sec, 160mm, ISO 250.

blogtunnel-view-0128.jpg

Do you ever get tired of the Tunnel View of Yosemite Valley. It’s almost always different from the last time you saw it. We were lucky that the clouds moved in the last hour or so, unfortunately they covered all of half dome in this shot but produced some wonderful colors. We hiked above the parking lot to get a better angle. Friedhelm lent me one of his graduated neutral density filters which allowed the sky to be more defined and keep definition in the foreground. You know what I’m ordering after this post. F8, 1/6sec, 26mm, ISO250, tripod mounted.

Leaves in contrast

blogmt-shasta-contrast-lea.jpg

Isn’t it great how nature provided us with wonderful contrasts. This was taken along a fence, the darker leaves were growing against the fence while the lighter leaves had grown both through the fence and the darker bush. These were the only lighter colored leaves on this side of the fence maybe the fact that they were facing south had something to do with it. Don’t we all love the sun!

F4.5, 1/15sec, 50mm ISO 200. And yup I used that wonderful tool called a tripod.
