Walking in the snow

photoblog-day-335.jpg

After we left Shasta dam we drove north oh Hwy. 5 towards the City of Mt. Shasta. We turned east on Hwy 89 towards McClouds where we stopped at the skying area. We found a path with an inch or two of fresh snow and followed the path. It was beautiful clear and crisp and I loved to photograph there.

Camera setting: 24mm focal length (full frame camera), f22, 1/60 sec., ISO 100. As most of the time I used a tripod!

Enjoy!

Lake and Mount Shasta

photoblog-day-334.jpg

We started our photographic day at 5:30 AM driving from our motel in Redding, CA to Lake Shasta dam. Security checked my photography back and then we were allowed to walk across the dam. The good news is that after years of drought the Lake is about 85% full. I shot this image after sunrise from a higher point. I used a Canon 70-200L lens at 200mm focal length. In addition I cropped the image so the actual focal length is hard to determine. Camera setting: f22, 1/50sec., ISO 100

Winterwonderland

Last week I had the opportunity to photograph in Northern California. My favorite subject was Lake and Mount Shasta. This image is created using an infrared filter. In the background you see Mt. Shasta.

Enjoy!

Standing Alone?

The single flower against a sea of poppies attracted me. I wanted the background poppies to be just clear enough to be recognized and maybe look a little like a pastel painting. I also like the contrasting lines, the stems of the poppies are at a different angle than the lone flower and add a little tension to the photograph.

Not just wildflowers

While hiking the Hite Cove trail and photographing wildflowers I came across this small creek.

I had to trek through some brush and trees to get to this spot and found out I am only mildly allergic to poison oak. Using a rock, log and my reflector as a  base I was able to set up my tripod so I could be steady enough to get this shot. I used a long exposure and high f-stop to get the water to blur and as much depth of field as possible.

Old and New

new-and-old-2.jpg

While hiking the Hite Cove trail I came upon this juxtaposition of old and new. It took a while to find the right angle and set up my tripod since the trail is very narrow and steep on both sides. It’s simply a fulfillment of mother natures promise.

f5.7 at 1/80 see, 105m, ISO200. 1.4 doubler and tripod mounted.

Sunset

photoblog-day-332.jpg

Many people think that you have to be at a beautiful place to get beautiful pictures. According to my kids we live at the most boring place on earth. Despite our boring cul-de-sac I photographed my neighbors truck right after sunset. The wind was going strong and moved the branches of the tree helping me to create this image. The blue and yellow colors work just fine together.  Camera setting: 109mm focal length, f8, 4sec., ISO 100.

Enjoy and find and create beautiful images right in your neighborhood!

Curiosity ….

photoblog-day-331.jpg

I started photographing cats for a special project. I was almost done photographing the cats in my neighborhood when I saw this one peaking through the window. I wonder what was so interesting inside? Camera setting: 75mm focal length, f5.0, 1/400sec., ISO 400.

Enjoy and have a great photographic day!

Infrared Photography

photoblog-day-330.jpg

I photographed this blossom using a Cokin infrared (89b) filter. It required a long exposure time and I had to wait until the wind died down. If you have never tried IR photography, give it a try. It is always good to try something new. Camera setting: 70-200 lens with an extension tube, f8, 30sec., ISO 100.

Enjoy!

California Spring 02

photoblog-day-329.jpg

The wild flowers are on their peak right know. If you are in living in Central California go up the hills and see the hillsides covered with beautiful flowers. Camera setting: 70-200 lens, extension tube, f5.6, 1640sec., ISO 100.

Have a great week!
