Mount Diablo

photoblog-day-375.jpg

I was hiking in Briones Regional Park located in the East Bay close to Walnut Creek, CA. It was pretty windy on the mountain ridge. I decided to “risk” a f22 shot because I wanted the most possible depth of field. No need to mention that I carried a tripod with me. The view from the ridge was outstanding and I noticed the clouds forming around Mount Diablo. That’s when I took the shot.

Happy photographing!

Fungi

Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start for Italians in Northern California to head to the woods in search of ‘fungi’, wild mushrooms.

I found a different kind of ‘fungi’ in my lawn. You don’t want to eat these toad stools, in fact on one hand I wish I hadn’t found it at all.

I used my telephoto lens set at 110mm with two extension tubes, 1 second at F11, ISO 125

Three Yosemite classics

As much as I’d like to trek on up to Yosemite this weekend it just isn’t in the cards. I’m adverse to crowds and traffic.

I thought I’d share a view of Yosemite Falls, the Swinging Bridge (lower right, it doesn’t swing) and the Merced River. It will have to do for those of us not able or willing to go to Yosemite itself. Hope you’re having a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and please don’t forget what this weekend honors and it’s not sales at Target!

Sun bathing

photoblog-day-374.jpg

This cactus was just beautiful in the late afternoon sun. I wanted to show a lot of detail and depth of field so choose f22 on my 70-200 lens. Enjoy and have a safe week-end.

Blooming Cactus

I love to photography beauty. I am constantly on the lookout for beauty and I am happy when I find something so beautiful like this cactus. I hope you can enjoy it with me and I wish you a happy working day!

Flower in the wind

photoblog-day-372.jpg

We are having a strange weather pattern in California this year. When I photographed the flowers on the “Farm” (Stanford University campus is called the “Farm”) it was relatively cold and windy. I had no tent with me and I wanted to photograph this beautiful poppy that was surrounded by an ocean of other flowers. I cranked up the ISO to 400, used f8 at 200mm at 1/125 of a sec.

Enjoy and if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, take the short trip to Stanford University. There is so much to see and photograph on the “Farm.”

Woody Woodpecker

photoblog-day-371.jpg

While I was photographing the cacti at the Arizona Cactus Garden I met two more photographers that were photographing a woodpecker. I joint that group and got this shot of a woodpecker bringing food into the nest. Enjoy!

Arizona Cactus Garden

photoblog-day-370.jpg

The Arizona Cactus Garden is located in the midst of Stanford University. The garden is more than 120 years old and offers incredible opportunities for every photographer. For more information on the garden go to http://library.stanford.edu/depts/physics/related/arizonagarden.html  I shot this image in the late afternoon as you can see in the long shadows. I used a 15-30mm Sigma lens on a full frame camera body. Camera setting: f11, 1/250sec., ISO 100.

Enjoy

Truly Wild

If you grew up in Northern California the word Manzanita does not bring a vision of beauty to mind since it is a true wild bush and seldom cultivated.

This is a dreaded brush that chokes out the young trees and spreads like wildfire. However in the spring even this dreaded plant brings just a bit of beauty to the landscape.

Finally Appreciated

I grew up in the shadow of Mt. Shasta and for about 21 years never really appreciated it.

I  knew if it looked like this I was shoveling snow, had just finished shoveling snow or was going to be shoveling snow soon.
After moving away and returning about 5 years later I finally realized just how lucky I had been. I now look forward to that first glimpse of the mountain as I travel up I-5 .
