Sunset at Hornitos

Yesterday after work I decided to take a little drive with no intended destination.

hornitos-sunset-5704.jpg

I drove up highway 140, the road to Yosemite, and took the turnoff to the little town of Hornitos, a road I’d never taken. Glad I did. My main problem was where to stop. The dead grass grew very close to the road and I didn’t want a hot muffler to start a fire. Luckily there was a wide spot on the side of a hill. I like the contrast between the brown of the hills and the orange of the sunset with a wonderful transition area in between. Hope you enjoy.

Spider at Sunrise

photoblog-day-430.jpg

I took my son to school at 5:40 AM. Afterwards I drove outside Merced to photograph at the water canals and the sunrise over the foothills. Suddenly I discovered all the spider nets over the water and I decided to photograph them. The light was just beautiful!

Camera setting: 200mm focal length, f5.6, 1/80sec., ISO 100, tripod mounted.

Enjoy and get out of bed to photograph early in the morning!

Horses in the Eastern Sierras

photoblog-day-429.jpg

I photographed these horses at Silver Lake. Silver Lake is one of the lakes at the June Lake loop which is on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. These horses in combination with the mountain in the background formed a beautiful composition that I saw while driving along the June Lake loop. I decided to stop and take the shot and I was not disappointed. Camera setting: 47mm focal length, f11 -2, 1/125sec., ISO 100, tripod mounted

A Name

photoblog-day-428.jpg

David and I were reflection on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. We asked ourselves: What is it that we had the feeling of piety while we were there. We decided that it was not the wall itself. It was the names of those fallen soldiers. Each and everyone of them were alive at one point and now they are gone. Each of them had parents, many had spouses or brothers and sisters. There were so many lives affected by their death. Seeing those names on this wall made war and the horror of war visible to us.

I hope for peace this day!

Vietnam Memorial Wall in Chowchilla, CA

photoblog-day-427.jpg

I photographed this former Vietnam veteran pilot at the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Chowchilla, CA. This wall moves from town to town. You can get for information about it at the following link: http://www.themovingwall.org/.

The wall brought back many memories and the small Chowchilla park was transformed into a place of tears, remembrance and piety. People shared their stories, left flowers and cried. I believe a lot of healing took place during the few days the wall was in Chowchilla.

Have a peaceful Tuesday!

Morning Clouds in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains

photoblog-day-426.jpg

First, I like to thank David for sharing so many great images during the time I was camping at June Lake with my family. Camping with family is not the same than being on a photographic excursion. I was happy that most of my family loves to sleep in and so I sneaked out between 5:00 and 6:00 AM to go photographing during the famous morning golden hour. Camera setting: 17mm focal length (full frame sensor), f11, 1/100sec., ISO 100, tripod mounted.

Thanks for looking and have a great photographic week!

Roofs of Bodie

Being high in the Sierra’s the sky at  Bodie was crystal clear with the deepest smog free blue.

roof-lines-5286.jpg

I shot this with an eye specifically towards the lines of the roofs and the weathered siding.  The chimney also caught my eye as did the opposing ‘dead’ areas. That is the lower left and the bright blue of the sky on the upper right. Notice how the shadow on the left mimics the lines of the roofs on the right creating three distinct, if unequal,  areas of the photograph.

Up, Up and ….

Back to the first part of my vacation we visited Olmstead Point in Yosemite on the way to Bodie and Mono Lake.

I like this photograph for a number of reasons. The cracks on the granite face lead you up to the smaller rock and then to the tree against a very blue sky. Hopefully your eye stops there and doesn’t wander off the page, but returns to take in the whole scene.

Lone Cabin

My sister and her boyfriend suggested we take a little hike.

lone-cabin-5626.jpg

Our hike lasted about 4+ hours and a rather steep incline. One thing that struck me is that we didn’t meet any other hikers until just before we concluded the hike at the top of the hill/mountain(?).  We did however see wonderful vistas and wildlife. This cabin was all by itself on the hillside and was apparently left over from an old ranch. Hope you enjoy.

Helen Hunt State Park, Colorado

Yes Virginia, there really is spring water in the Rockies just like the ad says.

rocky-mountain-spring-watger-5459.jpg

Helen Hunt State Park is just a short drive from Colorado Springs and well worth the few miles.  If you’re in the neighborhood take a minute to enjoy this great park and relax a little. Who could be tense with this kind of beauty surrounding you.
