Calla Lily

photoblog-day-630.jpg

David opened up my eyes for lines. Lines in nature are often curved while man made lines are most of the time straight. I loved to photograph this Calla Lily because of the beautiful lines.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Memorial Day

photoblog-day-634.jpg

I photographed this grave stone in Boston, MA. I cropped the image making the viewer wonder. I think this is part of Memorial Day that we miss the ones who sacrificed their lives. I hope for a world without wars, violence and crime and wonder if we will see it one day.

Keep on photographing!

Burma Shave

I took a little walk around Chowchilla this morning.

Passing a truly old fashioned barber shop I came upon these shaving mugs in the window. I don’t know if they use these anymore but I can remember my dad buying me my first shaving mug and brush. Yes, I’m that old and I think I still have the brush and razor somewhere.  This photograph actually brought back some very fond memories of growing up. Maybe a great tribute to the “Memorial Day” weekend. Stay safe.

You pointing at me?

Mom told me never to point at people, I guess birds are ok.

I was intrigued by the fact that all the branches seemed to be pointing at this bird. The cloud free sky helps keep you focus on the lines and focal point. It was getting dark and a bit of a wind so I jumped my iso to 800, shot at 5.6 and still had a handheld 1/25th of a second. Thank you image stabilization.

Pioneer

photoblog-day-633.jpg

I love to go to historical re-enactments and exhibitions. History determines who we are and where we are going to a certain degree. I had just a few seconds to photograph this gentleman. The interaction between his eye and his hands caught my attention. Faces and hands are the most important part of any portrait since they also determine who we are.

Enjoy and happy week-end!

Cactus

photoblog-day-632.jpg

A friend of mine invited me over to his house to photograph his blooming cacti. He told me that the plants “wait for a year to bloom and then they bloom for only day.” It was my lucky day because the overcast late afternoon light allowed me to create this images.

The Drummer

photoblog-day-631.jpg

I photographed the drummer of “Curtis and Luckey” from the side. In post processing I converted the image to a sketch using the “Topaz” plug-in. Then I bought back some of the colors. Drummers always fascinate me. I like the interaction between face and hands. Sometimes their faces are very intense, sometimes they are relaxed.

Also, this is a good example of using motion blur creatively. The 1/60 second exposure time was not fast enough to completely freeze the motion in the drum sticks.

Enjoy and happy photographing.

Chowchilla - Madera County Fair

photoblog-day-629.jpg

Curtis and Luckey played a the Chowchilla Fair. I went behind the stage to photograph them. Camera setting: C-sensor camera at 32mm, f4.5, 1/200sec., ISO 800.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Genuine

photoblog-day-628.jpg

I photographed this boy at the Chowchilla Fair. (It is always a good idea to ask the parents for permission before photographing a child!) He was deeply involved in his game and you can see the concentration in his face. Everything is genuine in this image. There is nothing fake in the boy’s expression.

The Keys

While at the old Mariposa jail I notice the ‘jailer’ had casually laid the keys on the guest register.

Unfortunately there  were recognizable names. I tried editing them out completely but that was tedious and not at all satisfactory. Instead I used a layer mask and blurred out portions of each name, not ideal but the lesser of two evils. I also turned it to a slightly sepia tone to give it an older look.
