No Duct Tape!

While in Bodie I came across this window repair.

window-pane-5251.jpg

I liked the structure and the textures. The weathered wood, crumbling putty, and the wonderful antique lock. Don’t you just love the ingenuity of the person who made the repair. All against a white curtain background that is, in fact, in perfect shape because this in one of the houses that the State park employees live in.

I couldn’t however, decide whether it should be in color or black and white. You decide!

Bodie, CA

photoblog-day-423.jpg

We shot a lot of small things that were in the shadow because of the harsh sunlight. I decided to try at least a few wider shots to show a little bit of the city and surroundings. The large blue building is the mining facility and you see the impact of the mining in the hills surrounding the city. Noticeable is also that there are no trees in the image. The elevation is around 8400 feet and therefor above tree line.

Enjoy and happy week-end

Window Cross

photoblog-day-415a.jpg

I was privileged to be part of the Merced City Walk last Saturday. During my walk I discovered an old window. The glass reflected the light in all kinds of colors and wood was pretty much deteriorated which created the possibility of an interesting image. Camera setting: 70-200mm lens with 12mm extension tube and doubler, f9, 1/13sec., ISO 100.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Window Closer

As usual Friedhelm and I took different roads:

window-closer-4897.jpg

Friedhelms exercise for photographers this week (www.passionforphotos.com) was windows.  I changed the windows in my house last year and found the old ones to be an intriguing subject. The bottom two closers remind me of fish swimming into the photograph, and I like the lines created by the various layers of window frames. I also used a lens I just acquired  and was testing it’s sharpness, I’m very happy!

1/60 sec at f5.6, 122mm, ISO 100, hand held.

Lighthouse, Crescent City, CA

photoblog-day-402.jpg

Lighthouses have their own appeal. This one in Crescent City is an island during high tide. It is also the highest point in Crescent City and definitely worth a visit. It is still used today and you can take an inside tour for a small fee.

Enjoy and happy Thursday!

Downtown Jacksonville, OR

photoblog-day-399.jpg

Jacksonville, OR, a few miles away from Medford, is a paradise for photographers. The historic buildings offers thousands of subjects. There is only one problem. Unless you come real early, there are cars parked everywhere and they really don’t belong here and as of now I have not found a way to integrate them into my images. I wish there would be a car free zone at least at “Main’ street.

Enjoy!

The Sundial Bridge in Redding at night

photoblog-day-398b.jpg

My wife and I just came back from a trip to northern California and southern Oregon. I like to use this opportunity than David for covering our Photoblog during the time of our trip. His images were just great

We stopped in Redding, CA and I had to photograph the Sundial Bridge again. David and I posted previously images about this magnificent bridge. (see April 1, 2010 and May 2, 2010. Camera setting: 15mm focal length, f18, 10sec., ISO 400, tripod mounted.

Enjoy and have a great week!

The Hook

the-hook-4781.jpg

While walking around Mission San Juan Batista I came across this hook. If you’ve seen some of my photographs in the past you know I like this style, single items against a larger backdrop.  I changed this to black and white to get rid of a slight color tint on the highlights of the metal. It was almost a black and white photograph from the beginning.

The Old Way

Almost all of Mission San Juan Batista is authentic. If not the original, a faithful restoration.

the-roof-4797.jpg

I found the roof structure’s lines interesting and the almost white space of the wall a good compliment, especially with the leather straps intruding into the wall space.. Changing it to black and white added to the feeling of age. The leather straps used to hold the roof together and the beam turned on edge interested the carpenter in me. However, I left the fluorescent light fixture in to add a little juxtaposition between the old and new.

I have seen the light? part 2

photoblog-day-391.jpg

A block from the capitol you will find the Cathedral. Unfortunately parking is very limited and we had only two quarters which gave us 24 minutes time to photograph. A friendly janitor opened the balcony for me and I was able to photograph this image.

Churches are usual great places for inspiration. There are many subjects to photograph in them and I always get a feeling of reverence and respect. In many churches I had the feeling to slow down and reflect about what is important in life. The photographer Roman Loranc stated something similar about the churches in eastern Europe:“I’m fascinated by the ancient churches of my homeland. These are holy spaces where millions of people have prayed for hundreds of years. They are places of great humility, and remind us how brief our lives are.” This quote is from his website: http://www.romanloranc.com/biography.html
