Merced Movie Theatre

photoblog-day-325.jpg

I photographed the Merced Movie Theatre from a small child’s perspective. I was literally laying on the ground using a super wide angle lens. Camera setting: 15mm focal length (full frame sensor), f11, 1/50sec., ISO 100.

Enjoy and sometimes it is good to see things from a different perspective!

Typewriter

I’ve been looking at this subject for some time now. Wondering if it would be anything.

It’s simply an old Underwood typewriter in front of my livingroom window with the morning sun coming through. I like the simplicity and the lines that cut through the background and add texture to a otherwise plain surface. I decided to leave the highlights on the mini blinds to enhance the textural feeling.

The Knob

I recently bought a Canon 55-250mm lens and was just shooting around the house trying it out. My intention was to delete all the photographs but this one caught my eye.

There is actually an optical illusion here. The center panel just behind the knob is actually raised. Since the main light source is coming from the bottom the shadow is on the top of the panel and the highlight from the bottom. Even though I know this it takes me a while to see it correctly.

Hope you enjoy. F8@1/25sec, 135mm, ISO 200, converted to black and white.

Mission San Luis Obispo

photoblog-day-306.jpg

I photographed the Mission in San Luis Obispo. This image of the columns takes you eye on a journey. The lines lead you eye to the square on the upper right side. Think about the lines in your photograph. The may be implied or real, regular or irregular. Consider how they impact your photograph. Harald Mante in his book “The Photograph” gives a great introduction into the usage of lines.

Enjoy and photograph!

Merced Courtyard

Here are a couple of photographs I took in a recent trip to downtown Merced. For a small town there is actually a lot of activity going on. The wind was blowing slightly so some of the tips on the palm tree are slightly blurred.  I just liked the contrasts, lines and lighting of the staircase and wall.

Some Capital Lights

lights-and-ceiling.jpg

This is another photograph I took on my trip to the State Capital a couple of weeks ago. Lately I seem to be drawn to lights and architecture. The Capital building is very ornate and a marvel in many ways. If you ever have the opportunity why not spend some time and discover it for yourself.

Back Door Entrance

photoblog-day-296.jpg

Night Photography has it’s own challenges and rewards. Many times I struggle with blown out highlights from lamps and too dark shadows. Adobe Lightroom (the new Adobe Lightroom beta version can be downloaded for free and used until the final version will ship in Spring of 2010) offers a wonderful masking tool which allow editing local areas. In the raw file it looked like that the light source completely blew out the entire area above the door. With Lightroom I was able to bring back quite a lot of structure and still give the impression of a strong light above the door.

Enjoy this image and have a wonderful week.

Back Door

Friedhelm and I did a little night photography. As usual coming back with very different perspectives and photographs:

While Friedhelm was on one side I was at the back intrigued by this simple and slightly ornate doorway. They don’t make em like they used to.  Black and white or color, your choice.

Old Hinges

I was photographing at the Merced courthouse when I discovered on the side of the building an old iron gate.  Camera setting: f22, 4sec., ISO 100.

Enjoy!

Beautiful Central California Coast part 03 - Inside Point Sur Lighthouse

“If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.” Lewis Carroll

The staircase inside the lighthouse reminds me of this quote.  I believe it is true for every photographer. The year is young. Have a plan where you would like to take your photography this year.

During the guided tour, one of the docents talked about “ghost activities” on the rock. I decided to create a second more spooky looking image. Enjoy!
