Rusty
13. November 2011 by David.
The morning sun can make anything look good.
Is it a bucket if the sides are only straps? Bodie is so dry (except in winter) that things rust very slowly, somewhere else this might have rusted away a long time ago. I like the patina of this old bucket and of course the lines. The mottled background of the grass adds a nice contrast and is an added plus.

Simple Elegance
9. October 2011 by David.
Bodie is full of simple things that have character.
I found the curve on this handle somewhat elegant in its own way. Today this handle would have been made by machine and entirely different. This was probably made by hand on a forge. Midday sun can be a real problem, the light can be to harsh, unless you’re looking for shadows………………

Business End

Wire that ‘Tamed the West’.
Barbed wire is said to be the wire that ‘tamed the west’. Before its use the west was wide open. I’m sure you’ve heard of the range wars. They were fought over whether the land would be open range for cattle or fenced off for farms and homesteads. You might say this little bit of Americana changed the whole American frontier.

For Sale?
25. September 2011 by David.
There are a number of old vehicles in Bodie.
I read somewhere that the car on the right is the most photographed item in Bodie. I myself have taken several shots of it. Well, maybe more than several. This time I thought I’d take a little wider view of the area.

Gears
24. September 2011 by David.
I took the opportunity to tour the old stamp mill in Bodie.
These gears sitting on a workbench caught my eye. They were some of the smaller pieces of equipment.
The stamp mill pulverizes the ore (rocks) into a fine dust that the gold is then extracted from. The noise is extremely loud and the process very dangerous, both from the equipment and the chemicals used.
This was definitely a tripod shot at 1/15th of a second f5.6.

Buggie Spokes
19. September 2011 by David.
I had the opportunity to visit Bodie again.
The light was just right to get both the spoke and it’s shadow. I changed it to black and white to bring out the contrast in the wood and add an older feel. I considered sepia tone but decided that it limited the contrast I was looking for.
