Rock in Clouds
30. August 2010 by Friedhelm.
This is Seal Rock right outside of San Francisco. The dark blue-gray clouds formed a great contrast to the “white” rock. The rock is almost shaped like a heart and it is an attraction for all kinds of photographers an tourists.
Camera setting: 200mm focal length, f11, 1/30sec., ISO 100, tripod mounted. Have a wonderful week and happy photographing!

Protected Beauty
18. July 2010 by David.
I wonder how long this flower would last if it didn’t have the spines of the cactus to protect it. The cactus was huge and this was the only flower on it. Well off the ground and among a cluster of spiny cacti.

The Hook
4. July 2010 by David.
While walking around Mission San Juan Batista I came across this hook. If you’ve seen some of my photographs in the past you know I like this style, single items against a larger backdrop. I changed this to black and white to get rid of a slight color tint on the highlights of the metal. It was almost a black and white photograph from the beginning.

The Old Way
1. July 2010 by David.
Almost all of Mission San Juan Batista is authentic. If not the original, a faithful restoration.
I found the roof structure’s lines interesting and the almost white space of the wall a good compliment, especially with the leather straps intruding into the wall space.. Changing it to black and white added to the feeling of age. The leather straps used to hold the roof together and the beam turned on edge interested the carpenter in me. However, I left the fluorescent light fixture in to add a little juxtaposition between the old and new.

The flower
30. June 2010 by David.
While at the mission I wandered through their garden.
Very few plants were in bloom but I came across this one with a single blossom. I don’t know what it’s called but I found it very beautiful and had to take the shot. If anyone knows what this flower is please leave a comment. Thanks

Portrait of an Angel
29. June 2010 by David.
When I first saw this statue it was early in the day and I walked right past it.
As it neared time for the mission to close I was walking toward the gift shop and this time the angel caught my eye. Photography means writing with light, if you see something that might be interesting and the photograph comes out ho-hum, give it another try, at a different time, different angle or with a little help from a flash or reflector. By the way a foam core board makes an excellent reflector and costs about $2.

Lit Candles
29. June 2010 by David.
I spent some time at Mission San Juan Batista over the weekend.
It is a wonderful place and a great place for a photographer. I was drawn to this display of lit candles their soft glow and flickering light were very peaceful. If you get a chance you should visit this wonderful historical sight. Another plus is it’s a lot cooler there than the valley.

Alcatraz Island at Sunset
14. June 2010 by Friedhelm.
Alcatraz Island is always fascinating. I photographed the Island right before sunset standing at the shore of Treasure Island. The intense sun created the mist and covered the Island with a sense of mystery. Camera setting: 200mm focal length (cropped), f22, 1/200sec. ISO 100, tripod mounted.
Enjoy and have a great day!

A Walkway of the Past
9. April 2010 by David.
If you go to the Carmel area be sure and visit the Mission there. It has been beautifully restored and a wonderful link to California’s past. The lines and earth tones of this walkway caught my eye. Even the plain wall on the right has some interesting features including doors and benches while the columns and rafters add to the depth of the photograph.

Lonely Flower
27. February 2010 by David.
When you first view this photograph you think, well it’s an out of focus shot of the sea. Then your eye catches that little flower in the lower right and jumps around a little bit. I thought about adding a cloud or two to add some tension but decided to keep the photograph as is. I used a slow shutter speed and larger f-stop to keep the foreground in focus and the background recognizable. This was actually the only flower I could see in the area.
