Merced downtown
10. February 2010 by Friedhelm.
It can be a challenge to combine several different light sources in one image. There are four different light sources in this images. There is the strong warm light in the front, the candle light in the window, the lamps in the restaurant and the cold neon light in the back. In this image the cold neon and the warm lights form a nice contrast and make this image work.
Enjoy and “think before you shoot” (quote from one of my favorite photographers, Martin Munkacsi).

Fog - Sunset - San Francisco
10. January 2010 by Friedhelm.
This shot was taken from Cesar Chavez Park in Berkeley, CA. The fog was rolling in and the sun was setting down creating this unbelievable red light. I used a 200mm lens and a neutral density filter. Of course, the image is cropped. Enjoy!

Jack London Square, Oakland, CA
25. December 2009 by Friedhelm.
We finished our trip to the Bay area at Jack London Square. The sunset was spectacular and I tried to catch the effects of the sun rays on the water fountain. Somehow this image reminded me of Christmas. Jesus was born in a small village centuries ago and the effects are visible until today. I hope the gifts we give and receive today brighten up the day and making us thankful.Camera setting: 24-105 lens@45mm, f18, 1/30sec., ISO 100, tripod mounted.
Enjoy!

UC Merced
22. September 2009 by Friedhelm.
Last night my wife and I went out to UC Merced to photograph. My goal was to shoot buildings at night. The reflection in the water was an added bonus. My camera settings: F7.1, 30sec. ISO 100 tripod mounted.
Enjoy!

Bob Hart Square
9. September 2009 by Friedhelm.
Bob Hart Square is a nice little place in downtown Merced, CA. There are nice restaurants and small shops around. It offers a lot of photo ops for any photographer. I took this image around 8:00 PM, 15mm, f13, 30sec, ISO 100, of course tripod mounted.
Enjoy!

A classic repeated
3. September 2009 by Friedhelm.
David and I went to the Merced, CA train station. I wanted to repeat an old classic: A moving train. The composition had to have two major parts: A moving (train) and a still subject (station). I used 2/3 of the composition for the train to emphasise the moving part. Using a 15mm setting on my Sigma 15-30 wide angle lens at ISO 800, f8, 2sec tripod mounted created this image.
Happy photographing

Reflection
1. September 2009 by Friedhelm.
For quite some time I was observing the birch trees in one of my neighbors front yard. Yesterday I noticed the reflection in the window. I had to step to the side in order not to be included in the image.
Enjoy and happy photographing!

Brick buildings
5. August 2009 by Friedhelm.
On my architectural journey through Germany we visited the City of Stendal in northern Germany. Stendal has a population of around 36,000. It has many Gothic brick buildings. Here is the Uenglinger gate. It was built in the 15. century and was part of the defense system of the city.
This is the town hall and in the background the Gothic church (St. Mary’s)
Inside St. Mary’s church: The red brick gives the church a very interesting appearance. I used a tripod, ISO 100, f22, 4s.

The streets of Halberstadt
31. July 2009 by Friedhelm.
You feel that you are about fifty years back in time when you walk through the city of Halberstadt. You see old, wooden framed houses, cobble stone street and people on bikes or walking. Stress seemed to be minimized.
My camera setting on all three images was aperture priority, ISO 100, f8. Time between 1/320 - 1/400s
The sign “Gyros” refers to a Greek restaurant. Germans love Italian ice cream and Greek restaurants and so does my wife. The smell of garlic is sometimes overbearing!
In the background you see the towers of the dome. That’s where we go next.
Happy shooting!

Chowchilla Golf Course
23. June 2009 by Friedhelm.
Many weddings and portraits were photographed at the lake and David and I decided to photograph it. For us the lake became subject not background. This is one of the most important consideration for any composition. What is your subject and what is your background? What design technique to you use to make that clear in your art work? The Hungarian photographer Martin Munkacsi always said: “Think while you shoot!”
Happy photographing and thinking?
