Hydrangea Serrata
7. February 2012 by Friedhelm.
Photographing flowers outside can be very challenging. When you are in a botanical garden you are restricted to the pathways and you are not allowed to use any photographic accessories inside the flower beds. That is fine with me since I want future generations to enjoy these plants as well, but it can be still a challenge. The second challenge is people, especially when you are photographing on a narrow path and they have to walk around you and your camera tripod. The third challenge is wind. Since there was a light breeze I had to crank up my ISO setting and I took several shot to make sure I got a clear image.
Enjoy this beautiful flower from Japan and keep on photographing!

First Sign of Spring
27. January 2012 by Friedhelm.
I sued a 135mm prime lens at f2.8 to create this image. While I was at Lake Yosemite I discovered that these little flowers were already blooming and I decided to photograph them in the morning sun. I used the lens wide open because I wanted just one flower to stand out and the others supporting the “hero.”
Enjoy and have a great week-end!

Winter Rose
4. January 2012 by Friedhelm.
Yesterday morning we were all fogged in. The light was beautifully soft and I saw this rose outside in my front yard. I grabbed my camera, tripod and a black cardboard to create this image. Camera setting: 180mm macro lens, f9, 1,20 sec., ISO 100, tripod mounted.
Enjoy and keep on photographing!

Christmas Orchid
31. December 2011 by David.
Not too many of my gifts were as photogenic as this orchid.
I hosted Christmas at my house this year, a rare occasion. My sister Annette brought me this orchid. I decided to photograph it with my Christmas tree as a background.

Flower Petals
6. December 2011 by Friedhelm.
There is not too much blooming at Gamble Garden (Palo Alto, CA) in December. I still found a number of great opportunities to photograph. I found these petals quite interesting and photographed them using my round reflector to control the light at least a little bit. 180mm macro lens, f13, 1/50sec., ISO 400, tripod mounted.
Enjoy and happy photographing!

Droste Effect
27. November 2011 by David.
I’m not one for major photo manipulation, but I think this is just cool.
This is called the Droste Effect and is a plugin filter for Photo Shop. I saw it on the web and just had to try and copy it. The web video was about 7 min long. It took me just a tag longer, yes that was sarcasm. I tried several different items, this flower and a clock worked very well. Some stuff just turned out bad.
Learned that if I do much more of this I’m going to need a faster graphics card. Any suggestions?

Flowers in Windows
21. November 2011 by Friedhelm.
I noticed flower baskets in many windows during my recent trip to Germany. I photographed these flower baskets in a small town called “Burg”, west of Berlin.
Enjoy and have a great week!

Fall
30. October 2011 by David.
There’s more to a pumpkin patch than pumpkins.
This sunflower reminds me that even though fall is a wonderful time to photograph it also signals the end of summer. While the flower is still colorful the leaves and stem tell the future.

Year Round Bee
19. October 2011 by David.
Never really thought about it but bees must eat all year long.
I look for ‘bee’ shots mostly in the spring. But during a recent trip to a pumpkin patch we found a lot of very active bees doing what they do best.

California Poppy in October
18. October 2011 by Friedhelm.
I was actually surprised that the California Poppy were still blooming at the botanical garden in Tilden park, right outside Berkeley, CA. I used my little spray bottle to get some small drops on the flower and I used a diffuser to soften the light.
Enjoy and be creative with your photography.
