Blossom in the Orchard

blossom-in-the-orchard.jpg

I liked the contrast of the blossom in front with the out of focus orchard in the background.  While your main focus is the blossoms the background gives it context. Hope you enjoy. This was actually taken a couple of years ago with a point and shoot camera.

Almond Reflections

almond-tree-reflection.jpg

After all the rain we’ve had you almost need galoshes to get into the orchards. However it did provide the opportunity for this shot. I liked how the dirty water actually changed the color of the blossoms in the reflection.

Lonely Flower

lonely-flower.jpg

When you first view this photograph you think, well it’s an out of focus shot of the sea. Then your eye catches that little flower in the lower right and jumps around a little bit. I thought about adding a cloud or two to add some tension but decided to keep the photograph as is. I used a slow shutter speed and larger f-stop to keep the foreground in focus and the background recognizable. This was actually the only flower I could see in the area.

Almost an Almond

This is one of the most beautiful times of the year in the valley. The wildflowers are starting to bloom and the almond trees are in full swing.

The bees were in full swing when I got to this orchard. This is one of the flowers that  hadn’t been visited yet. I also learned that I am not allergic to bee stings. Many years ago I was stung by a wasp and as the doctor said I had a ‘beautiful reaction’.

A simple carnation

photoblog-day-229.jpg

I photographed this carnation using my lightbox and a light coming from the right. As always I shot several times changing the aperture mode in order to get the best possible depth of field. Camera setting: Macro setting, f11, 1/6 sec., ISO 100.

When your disadvantage becomes your opportunity

photoblog-day-191.jpg

The wind was blowing and I did not have a tent with me to photograph. You try to focus on your subject and it moves through your viewfinder. A nightmare for every photographer. In order to get at a clear image I had to use ISO 400 instead of ISO 100 and I had to open up my lens to shoot at 1/1250 sec to freeze the action. Then I had to take several shots  to capture the flower at the right moment. When I looked at the image on my computer I discovered the wind had created an interesting composition. Plant particles were flying through the air creating a dynamic that I would nit have captured on a calm day. It taught me a lesson. Never give up in adverse condition. There is always the chance that you photograph something interesting.

Enjoy and have a great day!

A simple thistle

photoblog-day-190.jpg

On Monday I was photographing around Los Banos, CA. I was looking for birds when I saw a group of thistles.  They looked just great swinging in the wind. In order to get a sharp image I had to open up the lens or increase the ISO setting on my camera. I opted for less depths of field and shot this one at 1/320 of a second.

My wife’s flower bouquet - a great subject

photoblog-day-189.jpg

My wife got a nice flower bouquet which I had to borrow to photograph. I put it on my light box and I used three additional white(5600k) lights to illuminate the subject. I moved the lights around until I found an interesting setting that I photographed. Camera setting: f22, 1.3sec, ISO 100 tripod mounted!

A rose after the rain

photoblog-day-169.jpg

The first rain came a little bit early in Central California this year. I loved it because it created a lot of photo opportunities. I did not have to look or go very far. The roses in my back yard were full of water drops and created a wonderful display of light reflections.

Enjoy!
