Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco, CA

photoblog-day-438.jpg

If you need to be inspired or re-inspired to photograph flowers go the the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco. The building is the oldest building inside the Golden Gate Park and it is easy to find. There are many different flowers from different climate zones inside the building. Be aware, they don’t allow large tripods but a mono-pod is acceptable.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Lily Pads

This was a rather difficult shot to get.

lily-pad-5017.jpg

I was standing on a small balcony overlooking the pool containing these lilies(?).  Unfortunately shooting in low light, with extension tubes and wanting a large depth of field I needed the balcony to be very stable and that is hard to do with other people walking back and forth on the balcony. I decided to keep a low ISO, high f-stop and wait for the moment. I got lucky, but only took this and one other shot before the balcony was bouncing once again.

f25 at .6 sec, 240mm with extension tubes, ISO100.

Leopard Lily

photoblog-day-408b.jpg

I photographed this beautiful plant in north of San Francisco. Unfortunately there was a wind blowing and I to try several shot to get a good image. Camera setting: 200mm focal length, 12mm extension tube, f5.0, 1/50sec. -1, ISO 200

Enjoy and have a great photographic week!

Protected Beauty

beautiflul-protection-4805.jpg

I wonder how long this flower would last if it didn’t have the spines of the cactus to protect it. The cactus was huge and this was the only flower on it. Well off the ground and among a cluster of spiny cacti.

Gerbera in a Vase

photoblog-day-404b.jpg

We got some flowers yesterday and I isolated this Gerbera by putting it in a new vase. The blue vase and the red flower are complimentary. By moving the entire subject to the left I created even more dynamic in this composition. I used two strobes to create this composition. The first light comes from the upper right and the second light from the lower left behind the flower. This light setting creates a nice show inside the flower. Notice also the the white on the left gradually turns into a light gray adding to the dynamic of the picture. The frame around it is also created to support the overall structure of this image.

Enjoy!

Hidden Flower

I took a little walk around the local Post Office.

hiding-flower-4930.jpg

There are a number of flowering plants around the building and vehicle yard. Unfortunately it was getting late and  the wind was blowing just enough to blur many of my shots. This flower was hidden deep within the plant and was courteous enough to stay still while I took the shot.

1/13 sec at f9, 105mm with two extension tubes, ISO 400.

The flower

While at the mission I wandered through their garden.

Very few plants were in bloom but I came across this one with a single blossom. I don’t know what it’s called but I found it very beautiful and had to take the shot. If anyone knows what this flower is please leave a comment. Thanks

Two flowers

The Chowchilla Photo Club went on a little walk the other day using one of Friedhelms ‘Exercises for Photographers’  two-flowers-4703.jpg

We stopped every  one and a half minutes and took a photograph at that spot. It forces you to really look at your surroundings and maybe see opportunities you wouldn’t notice otherwise.

Check out Friedhelm’s sight at       http://www.passionforphotos.com/

Standing Tall

photoblog-day-378.jpg

On a walk I discovered this group of flowers. First, I walked right by them and later I returned to photograph them after all. They were in the middle of the sun and I used my light tent as a reflector to block out the sun. I used f11 on my 70-200 lens to get enough depth of field for the flowers and still blur the background. The background is the the sun and the lens created a great bouquet. This is a classic example how important it is to “work” the light. I am glad I took this shot.

Enjoy

Blooming Cactus

I love to photography beauty. I am constantly on the lookout for beauty and I am happy when I find something so beautiful like this cactus. I hope you can enjoy it with me and I wish you a happy working day!
