Reaching Trees

While watching a group try and get a volleyball out of a tree I noticed these along the edge of Lake Yosemite.

They seemed to be reaching toward the impending sunset, drawn to it much as I was.

Sailboats and Sunset

Earlier this week we had some pretty good winds and I thought I might catch some sailboats plying the waters of Lake Yosemite just outside Merced, CA.

Unfortunately the lake sits on a bit of a plateau and the winds were really whipping up pretty good, as you can see by the choppy waters. Definitely needed a tripod here.

Lake Yosemite after sunset

photoblog-day-353.jpg

There are more winter storms in California this year than the last years. Every time a rain storm moves through the Central Valley there is a great opportunity to photograph beautiful sunsets and landscapes with great clouds.  I created this image after I already thought: “Let’s go home, photography time is over.” I remembered the words of one of my photography teachers who said: “When other photographers put their cameras away you start shooting!” I am glad I did, because the red reflected colors on the lake are absolutely stunning! Camera setting: 70mm focal length, f14, 1/8sec., ISO 100

Cows at Lake Yosemite

After coming home from the East Coast I had to photograph at my favorite places. This image is created behind UC Merced at Lake Yosemite. The Spring evening was just gorgeous.

Enjoy!

Sunset

I purchased a new camera last year. When I looked at the memory card from the Sony I had been using before I found this among others.

This was taken at Lake Yosemite, the lake level is obviously low and we had one of those beautiful Valley sunsets. Hope you enjoy.

Mono chrome sunset

lake-merced-sunseg.jpg

I took this photo a couple of months back at Lake Yosemite. The sunset was behind and to my left. The light was so strong that it turned the usually dominant fall colors to an almost mono-chrome color. F11, 1/50 sec., 35mm.

Sunset at Lake Yosemite

photoblog-day-174.jpg

Lake Yosemite is one of my favorite places to photograph. I have a portrait session tonight so went out to test the light and to shoot this sunset. I walked along the shore until I found this spot that double frames the sun. The two trees embrace the sun and the twigs form a natural frame which gives the images a lot of depths. The reflecting rays on the water surface draw your eyes right into the sun.Camera settings: 24-105 lens @ 70mm, f 7.1, 1/320sec, ISO 100.

Enjoy!

Reflection at Lake Yosemite

photoblog-day-162.jpg

While David and I were waiting for the full moon to appear another photo opportunity came up. (Sometimes it really pays to turn around!) Sunset had already happened but the red light in the background created this beautiful reflection. I used a super wide angle lens (Sigma 15-30 at 20mm, f22, 30sec, ISO 100) and captured lot of “negative” space above the treas and the reflection in the water. For a while I considered to crop the image above the tree line. In my opinion the image would loose in quality. what do you think?

Happy shooting and if you can do it with another photographer. It is always fun!

Full Moon and Tree

blogmoonrise-lake-yosemite.jpg

Here’s my second installment from my trip to Lake Yosemite to catch the full moon. The sun had set and it was pretty much me, the moon and a couple of fisherman. That doesn’t include the party going on on the opposite shore.

Moonrise, au natural

bloglake-yosemite-moonrise.jpg

I decided to head up to Lake Yosemite last evening and try and get some moon shots. This photograph was not photoshopped, the color of the grass and sky are  the result of the orange sunset directly behind me.  I wish the sailboats that were on the lake a little earlier would have stayed a little longer, hmmm, do I hear a photoshop opportunity here. Nah, I like it as mother nature intended.

Also discovered I need a more sturdy tripod, Took some shots after the sun had set but the wind was blowing so hard I couldn’t get a blur free shot.

Hope you enjoy, on one of my monitors this photo comes up somewhat dark, hope you have a better view.
