Standing Tall

photoblog-day-603b.jpg

When I photographed Muir Woods the first time I just shot everything that was interesting to me. After being there a few times I am planning my shots better. In this images I am using the tree as leading lines that take the viewer to the upper left corner of the image.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Curls

photoblog-day-605.jpg

I photographed these “Curly ferns” at Muir woods National Monument. I created this image using two light sources, natural and strobe light. First, while my camera was mounted on a tripod, I underexposed the image to get a “dark background.” The I attached a flash via a six foot cable to my camera and moved several feet away to the right until I stood in a 45 degree angle towards the subject. I triggered the shot using the built in timer of the camera. The flash was strong enough to illuminate the curls beautifully but I left the background in the dark.

I also converted the image to black and white to create a more “dramatic effect.” Enjoy and happy photographing!

Izzi Bizzi Spider

photoblog-day-604.jpg

Last Saturday I was walking through Muir Woods National Monument north of San Francisco. I had no company and lots of time, a great combination for photography. On my walk I discovered this little spider. I had to take several shots until I finally got what I wanted.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Spider Web

photoblog-day-552.jpg

When I went to Muir Woods last Saturday when I saw the early morning light shining through the forest I decided to risk a shot. I did not even see the spider web in my view finder. I discovered it when I was back at home and examined the camera raw files.  I had to crop the image to make the spider web the subject of the image.

By the way who says that images have to be always in 4X6 or any other format. The square in this image is just fine. Enjoy and happy photographing!

Muir Woods again

photoblog-day-419.jpg

There is a lot to say about photographing, evaluating and going back and photograph again and again and again. The danger is that you get stuck in a rut and photograph the same thing over again. The beauty is that after you repeat shooting and evaluating your images your images you will learn from them and create better ones. Ansel Adams was one of those masters of photography who photographed until he saw the print in his hand that he earlier developed in his head.

I had to go back to Muir Woods and I had to photograph again these magnificent trees and I hope one of those days I will accomplish images that do these ancient trees justice. Enjoy and thanks for looking at our images.

Redwood Creek

photoblog-day-413.jpg

Every photographer knows: Light is everything. In a studio you can control the light in mother nature you need to be at the right light at the right place. I started photographing in Muir Woods early in the morning when the coastal fog created a beautiful soft light. Later on the sun peaked through and I started heading home thinking my photography day is over. Direct sun light means harsh shadows and unpleasant images. When I arrived at Bridge one I saw that the sun peaked “in an interesting way” through the trees and intrigued me to take another shot. And I am glad I did.

Enjoy and don’t forget: Every photographer is a boy scout: Always ready to shoot! Happy week-end

Fern at Muir Woods, CA

photoblog-day-412.jpg

At Muir Woods Ferns are abundant. Still, it took me quite some time to find some that I wanted to photograph. I already had in my mind to create a black and white image to put an emphasis on the structure of the plant and not on the color. This branch was sticking out and I love the image.

Enjoy your photography!

Four Brothers

photoblog-day-411.jpg

There are great hikes through Muir Woods. On one of them I saw a group of trees together basically forming a “V” shape. This was the perfect shot for me. Camera setting: 104mm focal length, f8, o.3sec., ISO 100, tripod mounted.

Enjoy!

The Leaf and the Spider Net

photoblog-day-410.jpg

On my walk through Muir Woods I came a cross this spider net. Looking closer i saw the a leaf got tangled up in it. Then the spider must have integrated the leaf into his construction and it became part of the net.

There is always something interesting to photograph in this world. Go out and find it!

Leopard Lily

photoblog-day-408b.jpg

I photographed this beautiful plant in north of San Francisco. Unfortunately there was a wind blowing and I to try several shot to get a good image. Camera setting: 200mm focal length, 12mm extension tube, f5.0, 1/50sec. -1, ISO 200

Enjoy and have a great photographic week!
