Flower and Ant

When in doubt print a flower shot.

flower-and-ant-4927.jpg

A photograph of a flower is always a pretty safe thing to post. I think this one has several things going for it. The flower while not perfect is in pretty good shape and has nice coloring. The ant adds a point of interest. But what I like most is how the background compliments and highlights the flower. Hope you agree. This was taken just before dusk and the softness of the evening light helped the pastel colors remain soft.

Carnivorous Plant

photoblog-day-440.jpg

This is another image I photographed at the Conservatory in San Francisco. I shot this image using a 50mm prime lens at f4 to get a relatively small depth of field. Enjoy and happy Friday!

Up, Up and ….

Back to the first part of my vacation we visited Olmstead Point in Yosemite on the way to Bodie and Mono Lake.

I like this photograph for a number of reasons. The cracks on the granite face lead you up to the smaller rock and then to the tree against a very blue sky. Hopefully your eye stops there and doesn’t wander off the page, but returns to take in the whole scene.

Fern and Falls

ferns-and-falls-5045.jpg

In this photograph I tried to play the two focal points against one another. Using the brightness of the ferns in the lower left against the softness of the falls that dominate the right side. The two points keep your eyes moving and hopefully you’ll notice the detail in between them.

Lily Pads

This was a rather difficult shot to get.

lily-pad-5017.jpg

I was standing on a small balcony overlooking the pool containing these lilies(?).  Unfortunately shooting in low light, with extension tubes and wanting a large depth of field I needed the balcony to be very stable and that is hard to do with other people walking back and forth on the balcony. I decided to keep a low ISO, high f-stop and wait for the moment. I got lucky, but only took this and one other shot before the balcony was bouncing once again.

Fern at Muir Woods, CA

photoblog-day-412.jpg

At Muir Woods Ferns are abundant. Still, it took me quite some time to find some that I wanted to photograph. I already had in my mind to create a black and white image to put an emphasis on the structure of the plant and not on the color. This branch was sticking out and I love the image.

Enjoy your photography!

Protected Beauty

beautiflul-protection-4805.jpg

I wonder how long this flower would last if it didn’t have the spines of the cactus to protect it. The cactus was huge and this was the only flower on it. Well off the ground and among a cluster of spiny cacti.

New Life

I discovered this little plant in between a pile of rubble.

photoblog-day-406.jpg

Somehow it got my attention and I had to photograph it. In my mind I compared this plant to the oil catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico symbolized in the brick pile of rubble. I hope new life will grow in that area as well.

Have a great Thursday and happy photographing!

Redwood Sorrell

photoblog-day-397.jpg

I arrived at Muir woods around 9:00 AM. The coastal fog created a beautiful natural “light box” with soft light. The fog was lifted around 11:00 AM so for two hours photography was incredibly good. I photographed theses plants (Redwood Sorrell) at a shady hill side. The light barely shined through.

Enjoy and happy photographing!
