Portrait Study: Relationship in a Portrait

photoblog-day-318.jpg

I photographed this young couple with the intent to show their very special relationship. The image is based on three focal points: The two faces and the hands. The idea is that your eyes wander from focal point to focal point. The young lady is looking at her boyfriend with a face that says: “I care!” The boyfriend is injured and sitting in a wheel chair. He is looking forward with a smile because their love is getting them through.  The message of the photograph is: Together we have a future!

Enjoy and have a great week-end!

Tulips and a girl

When I photograph a person I always think: Who is that person, what does he/she like? In what context does he/she thrive. In this image I wanted to show the relationship between this young lady and the tulips. Her eyes, her hair and the position of her legs establish a relationship with the flower.

Enjoy!

Reach the stars!

The difference between a portrait and a fashion shot is that in a portrait you want to show the person. In fashion shot like in any other product shot you want to show the product. This is more a fashion shot than a portrait. The jeans are really popping out. The message is: you can do anything with these jeans!. Watch also the position of the feet. They are in an almost 90 degree angle. The arms are almost in a 45 degree angle. Al this supports the overall structure of the image.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Portrait study

photoblog-day-299.jpg

I love to photograph portraits showing faces and at least one hand. The hand is for me as important as the face to describe the essence of a person.

Enjoy and go out and study faces and hands. Most important , have a positive attitude and respect for other people and your portraits will improve drastically!

Cool Guys

I photographed these two guys at Merced College. A college campus is a great place to start building your portrait portfolio. Most students are happy to be photographed especially if you email them a copy of your work.

Enjoy and have a great week-end!

Classroom portrait

I photographed this student in a classroom setting. The fluorescent light was horrible and I was happy getting this image using a prime 50mm lens, f2.8, 1/40sec., ISO 400.

Enjoy

The Eye of a Cleaner

photoblog-day-276.jpg

While I was photographing at DC Cleaners in Chowchilla, CA I tried to make myself invisible. I was hiding in between racks when one of the workers walked towards me with clean garment in her hands. I photographed her while she was hanging them up. Camera setting: 85mm lens, f2.8, 1/50sec., ISO 400.

Enjoy and next time you pick up your cleaned stuff thank the cleaners for their hard work!

From head to toe

photoblog-day-237.jpg

I love to photograph newborns. Since it is not a good idea to photograph a newborn with a flash I ask the mother to sit close to a large window. I used my 85mm portrait lens which naturally has a relatively narrow depth of field. The composition is a little bit difficult. Naturally the eye wander towards the face of any human subject and especially to babies. I wanted to put the emphasis on the little feet. Therefore I blurred the head out and photographed the foot in focus. The hand of the mother in between which is less blurred than the head gives the image an even stronger 3d feeling.

Enjoy!

Phoolin around with images

I am preparing a new Photoshop Boot camp. I am creating several exercises and I hope I have everything ready by January 2009. We will create compositions, working with layers and having quite some fun. Enjoy this creation!

Trick ‘r Treat

photoblog-day-209.jpg

The city of Chowchilla, CA organized a “Trick ‘r Treat” event where the local small businesses gave out candy. This was also an opportunity to photograph. I always ask permission when I photograph someone that I don’t know. I used a fill-in flash and took advantage of the beautiful ambient background light and I got some beautiful images like this one. A word of caution. In order to take advantage of the ambient light I had to position my camera below the subjects face. If the person had a double chin you have some post production work to edit it out.

Enjoy!
