View from the Top

photoblog-day-760.jpg

This is the view the ski jumpers have from the top of the Vogtland Arena. When I was up there I thought that not in a million years I would go down and jump. The view, however was magnificent.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Training Jump

photoblog-day-759.jpg

I took this image from the top of the “Vogtland Arena” in the small town of “Klingenthal” at the German Czech border. This modern ski ramp can be used even if there is no snow on the ground. For more info go to http://www.vogtland-arena.de/.

I shot this image from the top of the arena using my 70-200 lens which delivered a great image considering the speed of the ski jumper. Enjoy and keep on photographing!

Soccer Balls

While wandering around Chowchilla I found a new store that specializes in soccer.

I found this display of colorful soccer balls and took the shot. Unfortunately I couldn’t control the background or the size of the display but the various colors and patterns drew my attention.

Croquet and Fall

While in Mariposa I came across these croquet balls outside at an antique store.

Once again the various lines and textures caught my eye. The obvious focus is the croquet balls in the lower left, but as your eye wanders you can see a lot more going on from the mallet heads to the fall leaves topping the entire photograph.

Don’t throw the ball right now!

photoblog-day-268.jpg

Yesterday I did one of the best exercises you can do as a photographer. I took my DSLR and one lens only! I picked an 85mm portrait lens. I opened the lens to f2.8 and set the ISO to 400 since it was very early in the morning and there was a lot of high fog around which is typical in Central California this time of the year. The trick is to limit yourself. It is an old photographic wisdom that photographic skills are developed trough limitations. (Okay I cheated a little bit. It was still too dark for a few shots that I either opened up the lens more or changed the ISO setting). Then I started my exercise walk and photographed all kinds of things that I normally would not photograph. I simply wanted to see what would show up.  Usually I am happy if I like one image from my walk. This one I liked. Camera setting: f2.8, 1/2000sec., ISO 400, hand held.

Action is the name of the game

photoblog-day-166.jpg

I admire every sport photographer. In order to get good at it you have to develop a sense of where the action is going. Speed is the name of the game. You have to be ready at any time. In this image I pre-focused on the goal and I was waiting for the player to make his move. I got lucky. I froze the action just a 1/10th of a second before the ball got into the net. My camera setting was zoom lens @160mm, f5, 1/3200s, ISO 400.

Enjoy!
