Abandoned, Hungry and Hunted

photoblog-day-602.jpg

We live a block away from the bike path and Rahilly creek. Some people are unbelievable cruel to their pets by abandoning them there and there are people that take their dogs and let them chase the cats despite the Merced leash law for dogs. Sometimes I ask myself how cruel we human beings can become. On the other side I know people that care for these creatures, feed them and protect them. I am very thankful for that. Currently I am looking for a way to have as many as possible fixed. Will see how that goes.

I photographed this family of eight young cats that somehow sticks together. I hope to find a good home for them.

Have a great week-end!

Two Ducks?

When you first look at this photograph you see the fancy drake, or male duck.

But if you look a little to the right you’ll see the hen. A predator sees the same and thereby the coloring offers some protection for the hen. I believe these are Mallards and they mate for life. So if you see only one, something has happened to the other.

Birds at the Merced Game Refuge

photoblog-day-571.jpg

Last night I went back to Merced’s Game Refuge. It is a wonderful place to photograph nature and wildlife. I shot this image right around sunset. The red color in the water and the shadows of the birds make this image. Another interesting dynamic is that the the lower bird is walking towards the lone plant that sticks out of the water. My eyes are constantly wandering to that spot.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Egret

photoblog-day-567.jpg

Sometimes you just have to have a little luck. On my morning walk I saw this egret and I got this image with one foot up. A second later the bird took off.

Also, I am always amazed how sharp this Canon 70-200l lens is. David and I talked about cameras and lenses a lot and we think that it is more important to invest into great lenses than into camera bodies. You will keep your good lens a lot longer than your body which will be outdated in just a few years.

Have fun with your images and happy photographing!

Taking a Bath

photoblog-day-537.jpg

I observed several birds taking a bath in this fountain. I had plenty of time setting up my tripod and picking the right shutter speed. On one side I wanted a clear picture on the other side I wanted to see the water drops. I finally opted for 1/100 of a second.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Coyote, Yosemite NP

photoblog-day-500.jpg

As soon as the winter arrives in Yosemite National Park, the animal come down to the Valley. You see coyotes and deer quite often in Yosemite Valley. This one was running besides the road and I was lucky to have my camera ready.

Enjoy and happy Monday!

Bird not on a wire.

Eye2eye Photo Studios along with the Chowchilla Photo Club recently sponsored a photo walk in the City of Chowchilla.

It’s amazing what there is to photograph literally 3 blocks from home. We pass things everyday and sometime we just need to force ourselves to slow down and take a look. I just wish the pigeon had turned around, guess it was a little photo shy. The valley isn’t known for it’s blue sky’s but this day in the early morning I was lucky.

Sometimes You Lose

My sister Emilie gave me a little wall hanging that says “Somedays you’re the pigeon, somedays you’re the statue. This reminded me of that:

I was working in front of my old, dependable Ford Ranger when I looked up and saw this. If you live in the Valley bugs are standard issue with every car. It’s too bad this one ended up where it did.

I used my 50-250mm lens at 163mm to get as much depth of field as possible with the space I had to work with. I set my Canon 50d at .8 seconds at f32, ISO125. The longer the focal length you use the more the image is compressed giving you more depth of field. A higher f-stop also increases the depth of field.

Happy Trails

photoblog-day-395.jpg

On my photographic exercise walk I discovered this snail circumventing a small pile of dead weeds. The shape of the trail got my attention and I clicked the shutter a few times.

Enjoy and happy photographing!

Woody Woodpecker

photoblog-day-371.jpg

While I was photographing the cacti at the Arizona Cactus Garden I met two more photographers that were photographing a woodpecker. I joint that group and got this shot of a woodpecker bringing food into the nest. Enjoy!
