Winter Wonder Land

photoblog-day-843.jpg

When we arrived at Yosemite Valley last Sunday the streets were still clear and there were no chains required. Three hours later it was a different story. A new storm front moved. In between I was able to photograph a winter wonder land.

Winter in Mariposa County

photoblog-day-841.jpg

Since the snow storm was coming into Yosemite Valley we decided to drive home to avoid the heavy snow fall. Around sunset we drove through the foothills which are not very often covered by snow. I snapped this image on Hwy 140 right outside Mariposa, CA.

Reflection

Fern Spring is one of my favorite places in Yosemite Valley. Every time I stopp there I discover something different. The reflection caught my attention and I had to take several shots.

Late Winter Storm

photoblog-day-839.jpg

When we saw the weather report we decided to go up to Yosemite yesterday. In Mariposa, CA about half way we already were welcomed with a nice hail storm but the streets were still drive-able so we continued towards Yosemite. There was rain, hail and snow depending on the elevation. In Yosemite Valley we experienced a brief moment where the sun peaked through which created the opportunity for some great images. Camera setting: 17mm focal length, f11 (full frame sensor), 1/160sec., ISO 100.

Tenaya Lake at Sunset

photoblog-day-791.jpg

One of the best times to photograph is around sunsets and this is especially true in Yosemite National Park. I shot this image of Tenaya Lake while there were deep shadows on the trees around the lake and the surrounding mountain tops were still beautifully illuminated by the sunlight.

Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite National Park

photoblog-day-788.jpg

The elevation at Tuolume Meadows ( Yosemite National Park) is around 8600 feet and as you can see there is basically no snow there this January. Tioga pass is open and one has the rare opportunity to photograph the area in January.

Enjoy and have a great photographic week

Mt. Shasta with Train

With all the noise about the Royal Wedding, I was surprised that Mt. Shasta would be caught up in it as well.

While driving along Interstate 5 I came upon this view of Mt. Shasta with what appears to be a train of clouds following it from the west. I grew up in the Mt. Shasta area but never appreciated it as much as I do since I moved away. Why not look around your own world and see what you’d be missing if you moved and could only ‘visit’.

Upright Ice

No this photo isn’t upside down or shot directly from above.

upright-ice2-9035.jpg

While walking around a frozen, snow covered Castle Lake in Northern California I came across this interesting phenomenon.  A combination of a hillside, footprint in the snow, wind, sun and freezing temperatures created a upright ridge 2-3″ high on the downwind side of the footprint.  I like the fragility and texture created by the ice. The wind was still blowing yet this fragile ice sculpture remained. Right place, right time, I guess.

Hand held, 165mm with extension tube, f20 at 1/60sec. And darn cold too.
